It is one of the resident birds, so it can be observed in the distribution areas all year round. Its board-shaped arm wings with the characteristic fingers as well as the white butt (in adult birds) make the white-tailed eagle virtually unmistakable in flight. The plumage with its dark brown color is otherwise rather inconspicuous. As the name suggests, fish are the main food of the bird of prey. But mammals, other birds and carrion are also on its menu.     <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-8291730\" data-block-id=\"8291730\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">The nests, which can often be up to 4 meters high, 2 meters wide and 1 ton in weight, are often visited by the same breeding pair over several years and used to incubate up to 3 eggs per clutch. In addition to active persecution (shooting, poisoning, nest destruction), these include the decline in suitable habitats and the loss of breeding sites. This is partly due to an increasing intensification of use and the steadily advancing fragmentation of the habitat. Losses often occur due to collisions with power poles, power lines or wind turbines. Accidents in road and rail traffic are also not uncommon and the disturbance of breeding and feeding areas leads to a restriction in breeding success and a burden on individual individuals.     <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-f001789\" data-block-id=\"f001789\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">However, the white-tailed eagle in Germany was almost extinct just a few hundred years ago and there were only a very small number of breeding pairs. Thanks to comprehensive protection measures, the populations have been secured over the years and the species is now considered to be not endangered throughout Germany. Successful and comprehensive monitoring of the target species plays a decisive role for many protection measures.   <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-8dd6e11\" id=\"herausforderungen-und-bisheriges-vorgehen\" data-block-id=\"8dd6e11\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Challenges and previous approach<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-columns stk-block-columns stk-block stk-5a85374\" data-block-id=\"5a85374\"><div class=\"stk-row stk-inner-blocks stk-block-content stk-content-align stk-5a85374-column\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-column stk-block-column stk-column stk-block stk-b4a7540\" data-v=\"4\" data-block-id=\"b4a7540\"><style>@media screen and (min-width:690px){.stk-b4a7540 {flex:var(--stk-flex-grow, 1) 1 66.7% !important;}}<\/style><div class=\"stk-column-wrapper stk-block-column__content stk-container stk-b4a7540-container stk--no-background stk--no-padding\"><div class=\"stk-block-content stk-inner-blocks stk-b4a7540-inner-blocks\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-c27a601\" data-block-id=\"c27a601\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">The traditional approach to white-tailed eagle monitoring is to check known nest locations twice a year (March and June) from the ground using binoculars and a spotting scope. Attention is paid to whether the nest is occupied by a breeding pair or not. In June, a check is then carried out to determine the success of the breeding and the number of young animals that have hatched.   <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For tracking purposes, the young animals are then ringed and\/or fitted with GPS transmitters. These tasks are primarily carried out by nature park rangers who are responsible for nest monitoring or volunteers who work with the responsible institutions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-a8455d9\" data-block-id=\"a8455d9\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Finding new nest locations in particular could be a challenge. Most nests are already known from the uses in previous years.
